ARVERNE – (PIX11) Young mom Shoin Jacobs says every time she puts her 2-year-old  daughter to sleep at night, she worries and says a special prayer.

“I ask God to not let the house cave … because of the sinkhole,” Jacobs said.

As soon as you walk into her house you see what she means.  Hurricane Sandy swept through her Arverne home on Beach 63rd street.

The foundation under the home sunk in like quicksand and parts of her floor disappeared.

“You are literally afraid you house is going to fall in every night,” she told PIX11 News.

When FEMA evaluated her home, officials said it had sustained insufficient damage to qualify for aid.

“My mom is very worried; they went to FEMA so many times and the letter she got back was insufficient damage – that’s not insufficient damage,” Jacobs said.

FEMA told PIX11 the agency is looking into this case again.

Jacobs hopes FEMA helps this holiday.

“You want FEMA to step up; they need to, it’s terrible.”
