LEE COUNTY, FL –
A water main break caused a sinkhole to form at US-41 and Coconut Road. It has caused a power outage, which is affecting the traffic signal at the intersection.
The sinkhole is at the northwest corner of the intersection within the sidewalk area, just across the street from Coconut Point Mall.
Drivers are being sent on a short detour, while crews continue to work on the massive hole.
The power and control boxes for the traffic signal have fallen into the sinkhole, and there is currently no power at the intersection.
Bonita Springs Utilities Director of Operations, Andy Koebel says the sinkhole could have been caused by lightning.
“Lightning, could have been bad installation, if it was cocked during installation could have caused a stress point that finally gave way, could have been damaged during other construction, just a number of things,” Koebel said.
Officials say county traffic crews will be out Tuesday to put in a new traffic control box and hopefully get power back to the lights, but the hole could be here for some time.
