Heavy rainfall has opened up a large sinkhole near the Johnson County Administration Building on Dubuque Street.

First signs of the sinkhole began to show after mid-morning rain Monday caused the hole to grow rapidly just to the east of the Johnson County Administration Building, 913 S. Dubuque St. in Iowa City.

Bud Stockman, superintendent with the Iowa City streets division, said the sinkhole – which was caused by either breakage of an active storm sewer pipe or the cap blowing off a discontinued pipe – has likely been building beneath the surface for some time.
