A young man is in hospital after spending eight hours stuck in a huge sinkhole which he fell into in the middle of the night.

The 23-year-old man was with an outdoor adventure camp when he fell in the sinkhole at a cave in Victoria’s east.

The Queenslander decided to take a late night exploration with friends when he dropped his torch and fell into the 15 metre hole, according to 7 News.

The camper spent the night in the dark sinkhole as his friends used a satellite to call for help near Buchan on Wednesday.

Rescue teams were reportedly at the cave sinkhole from 2am but did’t manage to be freed until about 8.30am.

After a lengthy rescue, the young man was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with back and shoulder injuries.

Outward Bound said the group left ‘against instructions’ and without staff knowledge, according to ABC News.
