EAST AURORA, N.Y.(WKBW) – After being closed for nearly a month, Mikey Dee’s Cafe and Catering will reopen on Saturday, December 2nd.

The restaurant was forced to shut down after a 40 by 40 sinkhole opened in its parking lot, just feet away from the back door.

Mickey Dee’s utilities were turned off and deemed unsafe until engineers fixed the problem.

This has been an ongoing problem for the village. Much of the Village of East Aurora is built over Tannery Brook. This happened after the Main Street Bridge collapsed in the 1980s. The business community wanted more parking. In result they built streets and roadways on top of the drainage.

It was only designed to last 30 years and now it has been 31 years. The mayor said he has been asking the state to aid the efforts to fix this broken infrastructure. He filed a request for a State of an Emergency.

The village had enough emergency funds to fix a portion of the problem. To fix the entire problem it will cost millions.

Michael Dijoseph who owns Mikey Dee’s said the sinkhole damaged his building, and costing thousands of dollars in lost food. His insurance will not cover the cost, because they said the damage is the responsibility of the municipality.

But he said it’s great to be back in business.

“We need to get things running again. Get our employees back to work again,” Dijoseph said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Mikey Dee’s.
